Project Overview
Glencore-Xstrata Cezinc and Canadian Copper Refinery (CCR), formerly Noranda Mines and Metallurgic, faced significant health and safety challenges, including a high incidence of work-related injuries, absenteeism due to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), and related corporate costs. As a Health and Safety Advisor and Consultant, my mandate was to lead and implement effective strategies to significantly reduce these challenges and foster a culture of safety and wellbeing.
Challenges
High Costs of Work-Related Injuries: Work-related injuries, particularly MSDs, were extremely prevalent, leading to substantial financial losses.
Absenteeism: The impact of work-related illness and injury resulted in a considerable loss of productivity.
Complex Workforce Dynamics: Chronic disabilities and intricate organizational dynamics made it challenging to implement consistent interventions.
1. Corporate Ergonomics ProgramTo address the high rate of musculoskeletal disorders, I led the development of a comprehensive corporate ergonomic program across multiple production areas:
Engaged management and workers to provide training, support, and resources.
Encouraged early reporting of symptoms and established processes for evaluating ergonomic risks.
Identified hazards and developed tailored solutions for each production unit.
2. Risk Assessment ProcessI conducted a multi-site risk assessment program that included:
Developing a risk inventory and prioritizing the most pressing safety issues.
Establishing optimal health and safety programs by recommending tools, training modules, and organizational changes.
3. Train the TrainerTraining was a crucial part of our approach to sustainability:
Provided technical expertise and thought leadership to create a network of skilled trainers.
Created synergies among global teams, ensuring consistent standards and knowledge sharing.
4. Standardized Work ProcessesTo ensure ongoing safety improvements, I implemented standardized processes:
Documented best practices and developed easy-to-use standardized work forms.
Set the foundation for ongoing safety improvements using a Kaizen approach.
Results and Achievements
Reduced Absenteeism: Achieved a 34.8% reduction in absenteeism related to back pain and MSDs, translating to significant cost savings for the organization.
Successful Reinvestment Program: Led a reinvestment initiative to fund health improvements, reinvesting over $400,000 from CNESST into ergonomic enhancements.
Improved Safety Training: Enhanced job training modules and improved managerial safety training, resulting in a more engaged and informed workforce.
Ergonomics and Health Interventions: Introduced group interventions and tailored ergonomic adjustments that reduced symptoms of MSDs and chronic absenteeism.
Impact
This project successfully reduced injury rates, increased worker satisfaction, and brought substantial cost reductions. It also laid a foundation for sustainable health and safety practices that Glencore-Xstrata Cezinc and CCR continue to us
